Update 8/5/09

Lacey got thru her last surgery okay. Was a little bit miserable with record breaking temps in WA State, so we moved from Liz's in Gig Harbor to an air conditioned hotel room by the airport. Much better for Lacey to recuperate there. Her cheek, head, nose and lip surgery went well. There will probably be just 1 or 2 more minor procedures for her, but for the most part all is done. We appreciate everyone continuing to read this blog and for your prayers for Lacey, but we will not continue to update the blog, since she has recovered so well. Next step is Lacey getting her own apt in Portland next month, but she will continue to come back to Ketchikan in the summer months to work for SE Stevedoring.

Thank you again everyone. We thank and love you all.

God Bless.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your love and support throughout everything. I never really realized how many wonderful and caring people I have in my life. This experience has taught me a lot about life and in a way I'm greatful for it! I would have never been able to get through this without all your love and prayers so thank you! A special thank you to Jennifer and Russell for allowing us to use this blog. It helps a lot to read back on the earlier dates which I have no memory of.

I love you all!

Hi,

Went to Portland on Wednesday 5/22, the second anniversary of Lacey's accident. Visited with the Heisler's and then it was off to Seattle. Took us 5 hours to get to Liz's in Gig Harbor, which is twice as long as normal due to the Memorial Day traffic. Got up early on Friday and Liz, Lacey and I took off for Lacey's appt. with Dr. Neligan at the U of W. We were very impressed with him. He will be doing Lacey's next surgery around the end of the summer, as he is a very busy Dr. He will fix her nose, lips, cheek area and plans to implant a balloon under her scalp, where her hair is missing and she has a big bald spot. She will need to drive to Seattle every two weeks to have a saline solution inserted to stretch the skin, so he can eventually close it and Ta DA, it will close the bald spot and she can wear her hair up again. Lacey is still thinking about this procedure as it is painful, (as if she can't take it) but it is only for the first 24 hours after the injection. So we will see. Her surgeries are getting close to being over now. We are so very thankful.

Thank you to everyone of you who are praying for Lacey and continued progress. All is going well.

Take care and have a wonderful summer and stay safe. God Bless.

PS, Liz, Lacey and I all got Kings in the derby this weekend. Mike was a good guide for us. :o)

Lacey update 4/15/09

Just an update on Lacey. On March 17th Lacey went to visit Dr. Down's to discuss her next procedure only to find out that he is leaving his practice and relocating to North Carolina. I did a lot of research last week and found a wonderful surgeon at the University of Washington Medical Center, Dept. of Surgery, Dr. Peter Neligan. I am flying to Portland on Wednesday, May 20th, the 2nd anniversary of her accident, and we are driving to Seattle on Thursday, for an appt early am on Friday 5/22. We are so looking forward to meeting Dr. Neligan and to see what plan he will create for Lacey. We will fly home the afternoon of the 22nd and Lacey will stay for the long Memorial Day weekend (Derby fishing) and then back to Portland on Monday.

I don't know who said it but every door shut opens a new one. God surely has a plan for Lacey.

Will keep you updated. God Bless.

Lacey update 1/5/09

Happy New Year to everyone who is still reading the blog. I went to Portland on December 10th and Lacey had her surgery on the 12th. It went very well. Dr. Downs removed some tissue below her left brow that was causing her eye to appear more closed than the right. He also did revisions on her upper and lower lips and they are looking much better every time he works his magic. Scar tissue was removed above her lip to her lip line to make this happen. The nose surgery entailed clipping the inner right thingy so she could breathe better and two incisions on the bottom of each nostril to narrow the nose. The outcome of everything he did was so amazing. We once again have only God to thank for guiding Dr. Downs hands every step of the way and for helping Lacey heal so quickly. Both he and Dr. Downs are amazing.

Lacey and I returned home on Friday December 19th and we enjoyed a wonderful holiday season, up until last Friday, the day before Lacey left for Portland. We were having work done on her computer and just prior to picking it up the person who was repairing it called to report it had been stolen by unknown people who burglarized his home while he was at work. The very sad thing is nothing was backed up, so the journal that Lacey started right after she returned home from her accident is gone. She is heartbroken by this, as she had not read it yet and some of it was written before her memory was restored. We are praying that it is recovered and have posted a 250.00 reward for it's return.

Lacey's next appt with Dr. Downs is next week and a new plan for the next surgery will be addressed. She will have to have another Rhinoplasty to her nose, which is pretty extensive and will give her more projection. Also her right lower cheek area does not seem to heal properly after scar revision, so that will be another task and will need dermabrasion in that area. Dr. Downs also plans to do scar revision to her left temple area where she had quite a bit of damage. And after all that she may be done with surgery. Praise God!

We are so very thankful to all or our family and friends that continue to pray for Lacey. These prayers have been answered and continue to be answered.

God Bless you all!

9/28/08 Lacey Update

Since my last writing on 8/3, Lacey has been doing very well. She recovered from the dermabrasion and the scaring continues to fade.

We treated Lacey's knight in shining armor, Glenn Hogan, to a trip to Ketchikan recently. He arrived on 8/28 and left on 9/2 with a nice little fish box. We had a wonderful time with Glenn, showed him all the sites of Ketchikan, fed him good and let him feed Kona, our dog, lots of treats. They became fast friends. Mike, Lacey and Glenn went fishing and of course Miss Lacey had to show all the boys what fishing is all about by beating them with the big 14 pound Coho she caught. We brought Glenn to church and to Lacey's office and introduced him to many of our friends where a few tears were shed when they met the man responsible for Lacey's existence. Praise God for Glenn.

Lacey had her last day of work on 9/12 and we spent Saturday packing up for her big move to Portland. We left on Sunday the 14th, Travis Tinney picked us up at the airport and took us to the Tinney home in Kent where they stored Lacey's car. Thank you for that Rosie and Larry and thanks for the ride Travis. You are a very good driver. We drove to Whidbey Island that afternoon and stayed the night with Janet, Manny and Joe Rojas, Mike's sister and family. We had a wonderful time and visited with Grandma Mary and Grandpa Meryl.

On Monday the 15th Lacey drove us from Whidbey to Portland to the Heisler household. Lacey is attending Portland Community College, Rock Creek, which is just 5 minutes from Jamie and Linda's house.

We went to see Dr. Downs for a check up on Tuesday and he was very impressed with Lacey's progress. The next surgery is scheduled for December 12th, which is the day after winter break, so Lacey will be able to recover for a week and then come home for Christmas to finish recovery and be home for Christmas. He plans to do the upper lip connection to her nose surgery at that time. We still aren't really sure what this entails, because the language if foreign to us, but it connects the surgery where he did the reconstruction work above her upper lip to her nose and will narrow the nose and the projection of the nose will be better than it is now. Dr. Downs is a perfectionist and will not do any procedure unless it is in his master plan for an ideal outcome for Lacey.

We spent the remainder of the week outfitting Lacey's room at Jamie and Linda's with all the amenities she needs. It took the entire week, but we got it done.

I want to say thank you so much to Jamie and Linda for everything they have done for us and for having Lacey into such a loving family. And thank you Tommy for being that big brother. The Way is awesome according to Lacey. And Jamie Kay we love you.

I will update again in December after another successful surgery.

Take care and God Bless!

8/3/08 Update

Hello Everyone,

Just an update to let you know how Lacey's latest procedure went. We are in Portland right now at Jamie and Linda's. On Friday August 1st Lacey had two scar revisions to her face and a full face dermabrasion, which took several layers of skin off of it. It has been very painful for Lacey, but today has been a pretty good day and she has been able to keep things under control with her pain medication. Every day it gets a little bit better.

Dr. Down's elected not to do the nose/lip surgery yet. The upper lip where he did the corrective surgery several months ago, has not softened. For the best outcome to connect the lip to her nose and correct both, it has to soften a little bit more. So, she is probably looking at having that surgery around the holidays.

Lacey has her post check up with Dr. Downs on Thursday 8/7, then we will drive to Gig Harbor and park Lacey's car at Liz's, then home on Friday.

Slowly but surely we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks to everyone for your continued prayers and support. And thank you so much to Dr. Down's for his gentle hand and wisdom in this field. Thank you God for your guidance to all who have touched Lacey and have helped her through everything.

God Bless,

Lacey and Shelly
